Welcome to Millstone House

Escape to the Picturesque Village of Staindrop

Millstone House B&B has acquired the 'We're Good To Go' Industry Standard mark meaning that our business has followed government and industry COVID-19 guidelines, have a Risk Assessment in place and a process to maintain cleanliness and aid social distancing.

With just 3 double bedrooms, it is relatively easy to maintain a social distance at Millstone House. In addition to our already stringent cleaning regimes, we have put in place heightened disinfection plans to ensure all frequently touched areas are regularly disinfected. Guests will have access to hand sanitiser and antibacterial products for that extra level of reassurance.

For social distancing purposes we are requesting that all guest bookings are made online during this time. We will be in touch to ask for a fixed arrival/departure time to ensure all guest arrivals and check-outs are staggered.  We are continuing to serve cooked breakfasts between 8-9.30am (unless otherwise requested), guests can choose to stagger the time that they have their breakfast so that they are the only ones dining in the breakfast room. All food will be served directly to the table by a server wearing appropriate PPE.

Gary and Helen look forward to extending you a very warm welcome.

Marvellous Millstone

Just returned to reality after hiding away at the lovely Millstone House for a couple of days. Cosey, comfy, welcoming and spotlessly clean. Warm welcome from Gary and Helen when we arrived. We were soon seated on the terrace with homemade Victoria sponge and a pot of tea/cup of posh coffee. Room 2 had everything we could need and more. The bathroom was also well equipped. Water is hot in seconds.

Breakfast choice is quite vast but we both opted for fresh fruit and the traditional cooked breakfast and it did not disappoint either morning. Helen's bread is nearly as nice as her cakes!!

The shared area is another spotlessly clean spot with more choice in hot drinks than your average coffee shop. The fridge is a fab touch and we soon had our fizz ensconced on the shelf allocated to our room.

Really can't recommend the place enough as a place to escape and relax. We looked at all 3 rooms and would happily stay in any of them.

Hopefully Millstone makes it through another lockdown and Gary and Helen have a prosperous 2021.

We cannot recommend this beautiful B&B highly enough, and echo all of the other positive comments. Gary and Helen have designed and worked so hard to create somewhere really special to stay. They have really thought everything through (so you dont have to). They have included so many little touches to make your stay comfortable, and luxurious and we felt that nothing was too much trouble. The food is delicious, the rooms equipped with everything you might need and are decorated to give a sense of space and calm (the beds are so comfortable we asked for the details to buy the same for our home). Everyday, there is a delicious home bake waiting in your room, for your return from your day out, in the simply beautiful local area. The moment you arrive at Millstone, you start to breath easily. Gary and Helen are also managing the corona situation excellently, and we had no concerns at all. Gary and Helen deserve high praise for what they have created, and we have already recommended Millstone House to others, and will return ourselves too as we were able to really switch off from our busy lives and relax there - we did not want to leave. Do visit. You will want to stay longer. We took a look at each room, and they are all beautiful. Each is spacious, quiet and calm, warm but with access to step outside or have doors open for fresh air, with stylish decor, fixtures and fittings. Sleeping well is a given at Millstone. We returned refreshed - just what we had sought to do.

Millstone House, Staindrop

Absolutely stunning property and location. Everything is first class with an eye for detail and echo the comments made in other reviews.

Gary and Helen are superb hosts.

Would not hesitate to stay again or recommend to anyone visiting the area.

Simply The Best..

A five star labour of love. The quality of everything was above and beyond..from the oak doors to the fresh breakfasts. The amazing pillows(!) To the sunny terrace (OK we had our fleeces on). Rather than smuggle your contraband booze and snacks in.. you have your own shelf in the fancy Smeg fridge and are welcome to use it.

We're already telling friends and family. Thanks G&H.. you've created something very special here. It was great.

Plus - Raby Castle.. The Bowes Museum.. high force falls.. it's a gem of an area to visit.. bit overlooked with the Dales so close.. but every bit as stunning.

Our Wonderful Few Days in Teesdale

This is the most amazing B&B which is a luxury bijou hideaway which will give you the most amazing trip to this stunning area. The house is pure paradise, all of your needs have been anticipated, luxurious dressing gowns, towels and vast tempura bed which you just sink into! Fresh cake is left in your room each day to accompany your specialised coffee provided. One of the highlights of the visit was the devine breakfast fresh local products cooked so well and delivered with pride. So although I highly recommend it I am hoping there will still be space for my return visit very soon!

Just Perfect

We had a booking here from almost a year ago and had been really looking forward to our stay and from reading other reviews we had high expectations. Then a last minute medical emergency meant that we were unable to make the first 2 nights of our original 4 night booking. Gary and Helen could not have been more understanding about the situation we unfortunately found ourselves in. We we were so very pleased to at least enjoy 2 nights in this wonderful luxury B&B and in fact our high expectations were more than matched.

Our room was an extremely generous size as was the en-suite it had everything you could need plus a lovely slice of cake each day made by Helen. Coffee and tea is available in the large entrance hall with an amazing choice of beverages, fantastic with your own allocated shelf in the fridge there for milk. Outside on the rear terrace there are table and chairs for each of the 3 guest rooms, where you could enjoy a lovely outlook.

Breakfast is in the bespoke breakfast room where the choice on offer was exceptional. Whilst they had needed to do away with the buffet table for fruit and cereals due to COVID-19 safety measures this was no way spoilt the breakfast offering. We both enjoy starting off with a bowl of fruit when we are away and what we were given could not have been more generous. The various cooked breakfasts on offer were so varied and all were cooked/prepared faultlessly. From a virus point of view we could not have felt more safe whilst in no way spoiling our enjoyment.

Millstone House is ideally situated to enjoy the wonderful countryside close by and close enough to the city of Durham and Beamish Museum, Raby Castle amongst other attractions to make this a great base to enjoy the area.

We cannot wait to stay here again but for longer next time.

Amazing Standards and Hospitality

Stayed two days for my birthday. Definitely not long enough for this beautiful place. I have no hesitation in recommending this 5 star B and B. Many thanks Helen and Gary. Hopefully we will return in the not to distant future.

Luxury Experience

We had a wonderful two nights stay at Millstone House B&B. The location is very tranqil with bedroom views over freen fields. The owners Gary and Helen have thought of every detail and were very happy to ensure we had a relaxing time. Our room was spacious, clean and well equipped with very comfortable chairs and a superking size bed. The breakfasts were amazing and we enjoyed sampling the cooked traditional breakfasts (best sausages I've ever tasted and my wife had a great vegetarian option) and the excellent pancakes and salmon & scrambled eggs. All the ingredients are very high quality and expertly cooked. This is best run B&B we've ever visited. All the comfort and quality of a luxury hotel but quiet and low key as the B&B's with most character should be. if you are looking for a quiet, comfort and excellent breakfasts you won't find a better B&B.

Home from a weekend stay in the best bed and breakfast ever. Every detail has ben addressed and double checked, the whole experience was a joy. Breakfast was an experience to be savoured and enjoyed - forget about the diet - we did. Gary and Helen have worked hard to make their B&B what it is - the very best in excellence. Well done to them both.
